Jacques Pills
Jacques was already an established star when he married Edith. He
worked in partnership with Georges Tabet and they made themselves known on the
theatre circuit. He had been married to the singer Lucienne Boyer when he and
Edith first met. This was well over a decade before they married, and Jacques'
social world was very different to Edith's. She was involved with Paul Meurisse
at the time, so her liking for him was soon overshadowed by the demands of that
stormy relationship. The circumstances of who proposed marriage to whom seems
difficult to establish decisively. Edith, in her autobiography, claims it was
she who put the suggestion to him - Jacques says otherwise.
